3 Things to Ask a Videographer Before Hiring

One of the most important things we all talk about wanting in business and in life is clear expectations. We all intuitively know that it’s the proper starting point to have a successful relationship. But! Expectations vary between businesses and disciplines. Here are 3 things you want to have clarity on before hiring someone to make a video for your company.

1) Ask them: Can you show me something similar to the project I want to do?

This is your opportunity to see if there is a brand match between you and the videographer/media your looking into hiring. Does their style fit yours? Do their values as a company fit yours? Would you be proud to say you hired them?

2) Ask them: Who is going to write it?

“Write it” may be too involved depending on the project. It could also be a project that needs an exact script. Either way, you want to have clarity on who is the creative force behind the project. Do you have a clear idea of what you want and you just need someone to take what’s in your mind put it on camera? Are you hiring them to create the content in collaboration with you and your team? Or are you hiring them to pitch their best idea(s) to you and have them run with it? All these will require various numbers of meetings and interactions, different levels of planning, and will generate a different price. Which brings us to:

3) Ask them: How much is this going to cost?

Ask for a quote up front! Get clear on question #2 and then ask for a quote. This can and will fluctuate based on the needs of the project, but having an idea of the cost beforehand is really important for everyone involved, even when you’ve hired your friends for the job.

Clear expectations are essential. These 3 are just the beginning.
